Barbados oilseed rape delivers dazzling yields for Essex farmer

Essex farmer Nigel Cutmore is proving that not everyone is having a difficult time with oilseed rape this summer. At 5.2t/ha his seed crop of Barbados, a conventional variety with AHDB recommendation for the North, has defied his expectations.

“Without doubt the fact it was sown on virgin land helped its performance, but across 62 acres there is little to no cabbage stem flea beetle damage which is both encouraging and surprising given our location,” says Mr Cutmore who farms near Braintree.

This is his third season growing the variety for seed and he has agreed to sow it again this autumn.

“It’s a sound variety and has done well three years running. I’m hoping for a similar performance in 2020,” he adds.
