KWS Hybrid Rye – information about varieties and seeds

Hybrid rye is an ideal 2nd or 3rd cereal in light land conditions. Farmers in low rainfall areas (typically 650 mm or less), benefit the most from its drought tolerance.

Rye is not suitable for heavy or clay based soils, where slug damage occurs.

Hybrid rye carries a different input profile compared to 2nd wheat. Seed and PGR costs are higher, whilst nitrogen and fungicide inputs are substantially lower.

Yield performance in dry land situations is often far more consistent – adding resilience to rotational income.

Seed should be drilled at 2 – 3 cm. Early to Mid-September is the optimum. Seed is supplied in (12M) units: Adequate for: 6.0 hectares drilled at 200 seeds / m².

In finisher rations, rye acts to increase animal welfare, reduce fighting over feed, and boost gut health. Diet inclusions (of upto 70%) give maximum return on feed costs.

In sow rations, inclusions of around 25% are recommended.

• Rye can be fed as meal, liquid or pellet based feed; It is high in dietary fibre which promotes satiety, gut health and calm behaviour
• Rye can boost energy supply at farrowing; Arabinoxylan levels in rye far exceed wheat, this is converted to butyrate in the animals hind gut
• High straw yields; Straw provision acts as a novel stimuli & helps reduce aggression
