Hybrid Rye - Ready for Net Zero?

UK agriculture is uniquely placed to help achieve the goal of net zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2040.

Benefits from growing and feeding rye:

  • Total N use: Rye requires approx. - 45% less nitrogen compared to 2nd wheat, reducing N use across the whole crop rotation
  • Fungicide use: Brown rust control is essential, but modern KWS hybrids demand less fungicide applications, further reducing agrochemical inputs
  • Supply chain ‘end to end’ savings: Hybrid rye emits less CO2 / Kg of harvested grain, compared to other cereals, whilst delivering welfare benefits in monogastric feed

  • For us, a key advantage of growing rye is that it requires less nitrogen and we have seen a reduction of 44.7% compared to wheat.
