Herbicidal measures in sugarbeets
Sugarbeets have a rather subdued young plant development and a delayed row closure. Low air or ground temperatures in spring increase the effect. Of particular importance is the competition of the weeds in the 2-6 leaf stage of the sugarbeets.
Restriction regarding cultivation of farm saved sugarbeet seed
Pay close attention to restrictions on subsequent crops with your herbicide!
The use of maize and cereal herbicides can cause damage to the sugarbeet. To avoid this, note the following points:
- The triketone group in particular can damage beets
- Example: if maize is cultivated after beets, you must absolutely adhere to the restrictions on the succeeding crop
- even sulfonylureas used in the previous crop can cause damage due to herbicides to the beet
- even the smallest amounts can cause damage
- Blemishes associated with brightening and red leaf margins may indicate such damage
- Intensive plough tillage and moist conditions can reduce the damage
- clean your sprayer thoroughly before treating the beet fields
