Habitat demands of sugarbeet

As the respective growing conditions for sugarbeet cultivation heavily influence the achievable yield and quality level, the choice of a location is of particular importance for you as a farmer. Added to this are yield-influencing factors such as earth, water and temperature/solar radiation.

In addition to deep, structurally stable loess soil, many other soil types are suitable for successful sugarbeet cultivation. However the earth should be free of stones and not waterlogged. If the water and nutrient supply is ensured, sugarbeet can also be cultivated on peaty mineral soil and sandy soil.

Sugarbeet is cultivated primarily in temperature climate zones in which there is a warm but not humid climate. The beet has a low transpiration coefficient compared to other cultures cultivated at our latitudes (water demand 350–450 l/kg TM).

This means on the one hand, they can survive dry phases without yield decreases and that it has a relatively low water demand to form a proportionally low kg dry mass. For crop harvest, sugarbeet require a vegetation duration of 180–220 days. In August/September, sunny days and cool nights necessitate bringing the sugar inside. Sugarbeet is sensitive to late frosts in their early stages (< –5°C).
