Plant breeding for sustainable agriculture

Sustainable agriculture starts with the seed: That's why our breeders develop new plant varieties year after year that deliver higher yields, require fewer resources, are resistant to diseases and pests, and withstand adverse environmental conditions. At the same time, they always have their eyes on the future. Because a new variety is not created overnight, but takes a lot of time and intensive research work. Over several years, parent plants are combined with each other and their offspring are carefully tested and selected for desired properties. Manual work meets high-tech and numerous methods are used – from traditional crossbreeding to hybrid breeding to advanced biotechnological processes. It takes an average of ten years until a new variety is approved. A variety we develop today is therefore facing the challenges of tomorrow.
