Daria Koltsova – As the stars fell on me

Daria Koltsova, recipient of the Kaiserring Scholarship 2024, deeply reflects on the war in her homeland as a Ukrainian. She creates sculptures using materials such as glass and metal, which she assembles into touching installations. These works narrate her personal story and create powerful metaphors for destruction, resilience, and hope.

On February 27, the exhibition "As the stars fell on me" by Daria Koltsova opened in the newcomer KWS Art Lounge. Around 80 visitors admired the artist's impressive installations. Dr. Felix Büchting warmly welcomed all those present and handed over to Michael Stoeber, who introduced Koltsova's works and explained the historical and political background.

As the stars fell on me

„The concept of glass bullets came to me in the first months of the large-scale invasion. I cried a lot and then remembered a sentence I had read: ’Our tears are cast into bullets.‘ Thus, my grief and shock turned into anger and eventually into strength and the desire to do something, to be useful. I created small glass objects in the shape of bullets, which are also on display in the exhibition. Afterwards, I thought it might be interesting to make pendants so that everyone can wear them as a statement, as a manifesto of strength, as a message that every trauma can drive us forward, give us the strength to change the world around us, to protect ourselves and what we love, to take action. A pendant is a good reminder of our inner strength.“ Daria Koltsova

About the artist

Daria Koltsova is an important representative of the current Ukrainian art scene. She was born in 1987 in Kharkiv and studied art history and theory at the Academy of Design and Art. After completing her studies, she moved to Kiev. When war broke out, she fled first to Berlin and then to Oxford in the UK. Despite this, she often returns to her native Odessa to work.

Ever since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and staged a civil war in Donbass, but especially after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Daria Koltsova's thoughts and feelings have been dominated by the war in her country.

For a young artist like Daria Koltsova, the war is not only a great and lasting pain, but it also awakens artistic forces in her.

Visitors can view her touching works until May 10 during opening hours.
